Coaching Staff
Coach Chen is incredibly proud of his coaching staff as many are former players or his current high school coaches and they are all very skilled and positive with their coaching. The volleyball season is very long and requires a large time commitment from coaches, all of whom have outside commitments, careers, and families. Sky Volleyball staffs their teams with 2-3 coaches and our club coaches work together between teams so the majority of practices will always have 2 coaches present, although there will be days with 3 coaches and on very few occasions only 1 coach present.
Eddie Chen - Club Director and 14 Power Coach
Eddie is the Club Director and a Coach of Sky Volleyball Club. A UC Berkeley graduate and former engineer, he is currently a Physics teacher at Encinal High School and was the former St Joseph Notre Dame and San Leandro High School Women's Varisty Head Coach. As the SJND Varsity Coach, he led his team to within one game of the CIF State Championships, finishing 2nd place in Norther California Division 5 in 2013. He is also a director and coach of SandLegs Beach Volleyball club (www.sandlegs.net).
His coaching experience includes Women's and Men's High School Volleyball, SandLegs Beach Volleyball Club, Golden Bear Volleyball Club, NCVA High Performance Beach and Indoor Teams, and more. As the club director, he will manage and oversee club operations as well serves as an assistant coach when needed. His playing background is as a setter and outside hitter, but he currently plays beach doubles. He is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance and believes in positive coaching for his programs.
Nicky Hagan, 14 Power Coach
Nicky Hagan is the Head Coach of St Joseph Notre Dame Women's Volleyball Program. A former player and assistant coach for Coach Chen, she took over the SJND program in 2014 and led the team to a TCAL League Championship. She graduated from Albany High School and played college volleyball at Academy of Art in San Francisco. A former producer of the KRON morning television program, she currently works at SJND as their Events Coordinator and continues to be an avid volleyball player.
Kyle Hartman, 14 Power Coach
Kyle is in her first season coaching with Sky Volleyball, but has previous experience coaching at Sand Legs and an indoor club in Arkansas. Kyle has been playing indoor volleyball for 13 years. She played volleyball at the University of Central Arkansas, winning 3 Southland Conference Championships and had 2 appearances in the Div. 1 NCAA tournament. Since moving to CA, she has an increased interest in playing outdoor as well as indoor volleyball. She is also currently attending Samuel Merritt University to pursue a degree in physical therapy.
Dave Ma, 15 Power Coach
Dave Ma has been coaching club volleyball for over 15 years and has coached all age groups from 12’s to 18’s. He is also a high school and college certified official and is always around the sport. Prior to Sky Volleyball, he coached many of his previous season with Club Kalani. Dave is very skilled at developing the abilities of his players and teams and getting the most out of them.
Sabrina Sudarsana, 15 Power Coach
Sabrina has been coaching club volleyball for over five years, high school volleyball for two years, and has been playing for over seventeen years. She was the assistant coach for St Joseph Notre Dame High School Women's Varisty team for two high school seasons, both times making it to the CIF Northern California Division 5 playoffs. This will be her fifth season with Sky Volleyball Club. As a player, she played with local volleyball clubs - Golden Bear & Club Kalani. She currently works as a dental office manager and she is an avid indoor player and is excited to share her passion and love for volleyball with the youth of the East Bay.
Cassie Rodriguez, 12 Premier Coach
Cassie has been coaching volleyball for over 5 seasons now. Her experience first started with CYO volleyball at St. Elizabeth but then became the head coach of Club Kalani 14s. She is a graduate from St Joseph Notre Dame High School where she was the setter and captain and played varsity for her 4 years there under Coach Chen. She is currently the JV coach at SJND and is passionate about working with youth and bettering our communities. When she isn’t coaching, Cassie is attending school at Cal State East Bay, reffing for CYO, or working at the Hornet Museum. Volleyball is one of her many passions and she’s looking forward to a great season with Sky Volleyball.
Mirella Villalpando, 12 Premier Coach
Mirella is a volleyball enthusiast and is passionate about sharing her love for the game with youth. She played varsity volleyball at SJND under Coach Chen in addition to volleyball club throughout her high school years. As a libero, Coach Chen has called her one of the best passers he has ever coached and a pretty good physics student as well. While at Santa Clara University, she played on the Women’s Club Volleyball team. She has a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan in Public Health and Social Work and is currently a grant coordinator for an Oakland Hospital. She has been coaching for over 6 years - assisting in various volleyball clinics and served as Assistant Coach for Sky 14s last year. When not playing volleyball, she is usually cuddling with her dog Lula or attempting to learn the ukulele.
Geena Serles, 12 Premier Coach
Geena Serles has been playing volleyball since the 4th grade. Her experience first started with CYO volleyball at St. Philip Neri, and continued at SJND High School where she played varsity volleyball, and was team captain, under Coach Chen. After graduation, she continued to help Coach Chen with different volleyball clinics while attending University of San Francisco. currently, she works in the sports offices at UC Berkeley. This is her first year assisting with Sky Volleyball and she's very excited! Volleyball and coaching are two of her passions and she’s looking forward to a great first season.
Khalia Burton-Hom
Khalia has been assisting with Sky Volleyball for many seasons. A graduate of St Joseph Notre Dame High School, Khalia was a four year Varsity player under Coach Chen. Khalia currently attends the University of San Francisco where she is studying to be a nurse.
Mae Ceralvo
Mae Ceralvo was introduced to competitive volleyball at the tender age of 11 years old through a local summer league. She developed her skills as an athlete playing for St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School (SPSV) in Vallejo playing outside hitter and opposite positions. Her professional coaching career began in 2001 as the Junior Varsity coach at SPSV and took over as Varsity coach in 2002. She left SPSV to pursue her college degree full time but found opportunities to play for the University of London Union and the University of California, San Diego women's club team. She returned to coaching volleyball in 20011 where she cultivated her skills as a coach and gained new insights working with Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy located in Pleasant Hill, California. Her USAV certifications include IMPACT, CAP1, and Beach IMPACT certifications. This is her first year coaching with Sky Volleyball and is excited to be a part of the Alameda volleyball community.
